California Prepares for the Winter with Coronavirus Cases on the RiseAn article recently written by Maura Dolan and Luke Money for Los Angeles Times paints a bleak picture for California as COVID-19 cases get steadily closer to the 1 million mark. The article titled, California Faces Winter of Misery as Coronavirus Spreading Like 'Fire' expands on the risks that Californians will face come winter after having reported an estimate of 6,377 new cases per day.

California entered the month of November with an alarming surge of COVID-19 cases, and in the past week, infection rates saw an increase of 38%. Now, health officers anticipate that the numbers will continue to climb once newly infected individuals start showing symptoms.

Interstate travel works as a constant risk factor, according to infectious disease expert John Swartzberg. With the approach of the holiday season, more people will start moving to and from the states, so Swartzberg recommends a quarantine period for travelers.

Nearly one-quarter of California counties, including Sacramento, Los Angeles, Stanislaus, Imperial, and San Diego, have pushed back the reopening of public spaces, while authorities continue to evaluate different plans to slow down the state's infection rates. While the majority of the state moves back to the strictest safety regulations, health officials urge people to respect the security protocols and avoid indoor gatherings during the holidays.

Despite all this, many experts fear possible outbreaks. After months of confinement, businesses are nursing their losses while many people have grown less tolerant of the new restrictive measures. As Swartzberg suggests, this dissatisfaction could be one of the factors triggering a further increase of coronavirus cases in December.
