New COVID-19 Variant Confirmed In LANew Coronavirus variants (the New York and Brazilian) were identified in Los Angeles and Southern California on March 3rd, prompting questions and raising concerns as the city recovers from the pandemic's worst days. Many consider this new variant a warning that the coronavirus is still a concern, even as the number of new infections in LA continues to decline. According to the article "Brazilian Coronavirus Variant Identified In Los Angeles", Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the state's first case of the New York variant in Southern California; and county health officials have reported a case of the Brazilian variant.

The coronavirus's new variants are thought to be more rapidly transmitted than the original, and some data suggests they may also be resistant to antibodies. While there's a lot to learn from these new variants, Brazilian authorities have confirmed several cases of people recovering from the original coronavirus only to then get sick with the new variant. Federal officials have cautioned that the variant could make current COVID-19 vaccines less effective.

According to state data, the county's adjusted average daily incidence of new COVID-19 virus infections was 7.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. The county will step out of the stringent purple tier and get into the red tier if the figure slips to 7 per 100,000 inhabitants and remains there for two weeks. Moving to the red tier will resume in-person teaching, as well as allowing more businesses to open.
