Students Getting Their Hands Sanitized by Their TeacherOver 5,300 COVID-19 cases were detected among K-12 students in Los Angeles County in late August. A number that, on September 1st, the county's public health director called alarming but she and the county's superintendent of schools expressed confidence in the safety measures in place on campuses.

As stated by NBC Los Angeles in the article titled "More Than 5,300 COVID Cases Reported Among K-12 Students in la County Over Past Two Weeks", Los Angeles Unified School District, which conducts almost two-thirds of the county's COVID testing, is mostly responsible for detecting the cases, according to Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.

She added that the significant number of cases means the county has more work to do because every one of the patients must be interviewed so that their close contacts can be identified and quarantined.

Between Aug. 15th and Aug. 29th, the county reported it had found 5,307 COVID-19 cases among students and 729 cases among school employees.

The county reported another 33 COVID deaths on August 31st, bringing the total number of deaths from the epidemic to 25,284. On that same day, the county registered 1,938 new infections, bringing the overall number of confirmed cases in the county to 1,407,317.
